What You Need to Know about NDIS Medium-Term Accommodation
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for eligible people with disabilities to access a variety of home and living support options. Accessible housing is a crucial part of a person’s journey towards independent living. Specialist Disability Accommodation funded by the NDIS is a perfect example of long-term disability housing which enables its participants to live independently and pursue their goals. In certain circumstances when the participants cannot move into their long-term homes immediately, the NDIS funds Medium-term accommodation which covers the cost of their accommodation to live somewhere for up to 90 days.
Medium-term accommodation is not a standalone support which means that it is not funded alone but only as part of other home and living support options. Participants must meet certain eligibility criteria to access Medium-term accommodation. This support is only funded if the participants have a long-term house prepared that they intend to occupy when the time for Medium-term accommodation ends. If the participant’s disability supports are not ready which prevents them from moving into their long-term home and their disability makes it difficult for them to stay at their current accommodation, they could be eligible for Medium-term accommodation. Participant’s other expenses such as food, utility bills or daily living costs are not covered under this support. The rental cost that the participant claims for Medium-term accommodation cannot exceed the maximum amount itemised in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. If your rent is less than the maximum amount, the NDIS will only cover the amount that corresponds to your actual payment.
